Sandra Murray MBE, Inverness based couturier and fluent Gaelic speaker, will hold two special masterclasses for aspiring fashion designers, in Gaelic language, in November.

The masterclasses, which will be free of charge, are supported by Comunn na Gàidhlig and aimed at Gaelic-speaking secondary school pupils aged 14 and above, and Gaelic language students wishing to specialise in fashion and textiles.

The Masterclases will run on Thursday 1st and Wednesday 7th November.

Sandra created a stunning capsule wardrobe for Julie Fowlis, Gaelic singing star of Disney• Pixar's 'Brave' for her red carpet appearances at the film's global premieres in LA, Edinburgh and Inverness; the resulting designs have been seen by an audience of millions. Julie Fowlis, dressed and styled by Sandra, also took part in a professional photoshoot, with Royal photographer John Swannell, at a private castle by the shores of Loch Ness. Now young people can find out how it all came about from the couturier herself, at these special masterclasses, which will be conducted in Gaelic language at Sandra's Inverness studio, and will give an invaluable insight into the world of fashion and the challenges designers face

"This collaboration has been been great for both of us - one being an ambassador for the skills of the other;" Sandra Murray states. "I look forward to talking to young people about working with Julie to create the best red carpet look for her, and what the project has meant for me as a designer."

Julie Fowlis will be present to answer any questions relating to this unique collaboration.

The masterclasses are generously funded by Comunn na Gaidhlig under its Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) contract, which has a strong focus on businesses taking advantage of the commercial opportunities presented by Gaelic.

Donald MacNeill, Chief Executive of Comunn na Gaidhlig, said: "The international platform for the language which this project has provided is exactly the sort of thing we're trying to encourage. We have a very strong focus on working with young people - providing them with positive experiences related to Gaelic, and that's why we're particularly delighted to be supporting the Masterclasses as part of this project. There's little doubt that Sandra and Julie can be very powerful role models for young Gaels, as people who are achieving commercial and critical success, and who are using Gaelic as part of their offering in creative and modern industries - themselves attractive to young people.

Julie and Sandra will have a wealth of 'real world' experience to pass on, and who's to say how these masterclasses might inspire the next generation?".

BOOK NOW – places are limited to 15 per masterclass.
