BT Debate opens in An Lanntair

1st November 2005

The BT Scotland National Gaelic Debate is once again on the horizon and this year 16 teams from schools throughout the country are participating in the competition. The first two rounds are being held in Stornoway on Tuesday the 8th and Wednesday the 9th of November. These rounds will take place in 'An Lanntair' - the brand new arts centre recently opened in the town centre.

The two final rounds are to take place on Tuesday the 22nd and Wednesday the 23rd of November in the University of Edinburgh and in the Scottish Parliament, respectively.

Donald MacLean, the Chairman of the Debate Management Committee, said "The debating teams will be representing Plockton High School, James Gillespie High School, Gairloch High School, Hazlehead Academy, Farr High School, Dingwall High School, Sgoil Lionacleit, Millburn Academy, Claremont High School, Portree High School, Hillpark High School, Bishopbriggs High School and Castlebay School. A wide variety of topics will be discussed in this debating series - for example, 'Nuclear power - without it, the lights will go out' and 'Camilla should not be prevented from becoming Queen'. We are once more anticipating first class debates from this year's teams. With a contribution of £15,000 BT Scotland are again providing the majority of this year's debate funding. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the Gaelic Media Service and Comunn na Gàidhlig are also providing funding for this event."
