Dùn Èideann a’ buannachd Deasbad Nàiseanta BT

5 Dùbhlachd 2005

Deasbad anns a’ Phàrlamaid

B’e sgioba làidir bho Àrd-sgoil Sheumais Gillespie ann an Dùn Èideann a bhuannaich Deasbad Nàiseanta Gàidhlig BT Alba na bliadhna-sa. Bha an sgioba air a dhèanamh an àrd le Anna Roberts agus Seumas MacLeòid. Tha an dithis aca anns a’ bhliadhna mu dheireadh san sgoil agus tha iad nan seann eòlaichean air an Deasbad oir tha iad air a bhith a’ riochdachadh na Sgoile aca anns an fharpais thairis air an dà bhliadhna a chaidh seachad.

Ghabh cuairt dheireannaich an Deasbaid àite ann am Pàrlamaid na h-Alba agus b’e "’s e suirghe air-loidhne an dòigh air adhart" a bh’aca mar chuspair. B’e sgioba bho Àrd-sgoil Allt a’ Mhuilinn a bha a’ farpais nan aghaidh anns a’ chuairt dheireannaich. Gu mì-fhortanach dh’fhàs aon sgoilear bho Àrd-sgoil Allt a’ Mhuilinn tinn goirid ro thoiseach an Deasbaid agus b’fheudar dha sgoilear bho Àrd-sgoil Chnoc na Pàirce ann an Glaschu, a ghabh pàirt anns an iar chuairt dheireannaich an oidhche roimhe sin, a dhol na h-àite. Mhol na britheamhan an dà sgioba airson cho àrd ’sa bha na sgilean deasbaid aca. Chaidh Cuach an Deasbaid a thoirt seachad dha sgioba Sheumais Gillespie le Dòmhnall MacIlleMhìcheil, Stiùiriche Sanasachd aig BT Alba a bhuineas dha Steòrnabhagh. Chaidh Sgiath BBC Craoladh nan Gaidheal airson an òraidiche a b’fheàrr san fharpais air fad a thoirt dha Eilidh Bowie à Àrd-sgoil Allt a’ Mhuilinn le Mairead Màiri Mhoireach, Ceannard Roinn na Gàidhlig aig a BhBC.

Thuirt Dòmhnall Màrtainn, Cathraiche an Deasbaid "Tha mi a’ moladh gach neach a ghabh pàirt anns an fharpais am bliadhna airson an t-saothair mhòir a rinn iad. Chòrd an fharpais rium math dha rìribh agus bha e follaiseach gun do dh’èist na ceithir sgioban a fhuair dhan iar chuairt dheireannaich ris a’ chomhairle a thug na britheamhan orra anns a’ chiad dà chuairt. Tha seo na dhearbhadh air cho feumail ’sa tha an fharpais le bhi a’ toirt piseach air sgilean deasbaid, labhairt agus èisteachd nan sgoilearan."

Edinburgh School wins BT Gaelic Debate

5th December 2005

The winning team

This year's BT Gaelic School's Debate was won against some stiff opposition by a team from James Gillespie's High School in Edinburgh. The team members, Anna Roberts and James Macleod are both in their final year at the School and are veterans in the Debate having represented the School in the Debate over the past two years.

The topic for the final debate, which took place in the Holyrood Parliament was On-line dating is the way forward. The other finalist was a team from Millburn Academy in Inverness. Unfortunately, one of the Millburn team members took ill shortly before the start of the Debate and was replaced by a pupil from Hillpark High School in Glasgow who had taken part in the semi-final the previous night. The judges paid tribute to both teams for a high standard of Debate. The Debate Trophy was presented to the James Gillespie team members by Donald Carmichael BT's Scotland's Sales Director and a native of Stornoway. The winner of the BBC Craoladh na Gaidheal Shield for the best debater of the competition was presented to Eilidh Bowie from Millburn Academy by Margaret Mary Murray Head of Gaelic at the BBC.

Chairman of the Debate Donald Martin said "all those who participated this year have to be congratulated for all their hard work. It was a very enjoyable competition and it was evident that the advice given by the adjudicators during the first two rounds had been taken into account by all four teams who made it to the semi-finals. This demonstrates the value of the competition in enhancing the debating, speaking and listening skills of the participants"
