Iomairt airson Taic na Gàidhlig aig a' Mhòid

21/10/05

Gus Mòd nan Eilean Siar a chomharrachadh, tha Plana Cànain nan Eilean Siar, ann an co-bhonn le Comunn na Gàidhlig, airson 's gun tèid barrachd Gàidhlig a bhruidhinn air sràidean Steòrnabhaigh. Tha iad air 200 bràiste òrdanachadh air a bheil caochladh theachdaireachdan leithid 'Bruidhinn Gàidhlig rium!' agus 'Tha Beurla agam cuideachd!'. Tha iad an dùil seo a sgaoileadh am measg luchd-obrach a' bhaile gus am bruidhinn an dà chuid luchd-frithealaidh a' Mhòid agus muinntir nan Eilean Siar fhèin Gàidhlig ri luchd-cleachdaidh nam bràistean.

Thuirt Magaidh NicAoidh, co-òrdanaiche Plana Cànain nan Eilean Siar, "Tha sinn a' smaoineachadh gu bheil e fìor chudthromach gum bi daoine aig a bheil a' Ghàidhlig ga bruidhinn. Tha sinn den bheachd gu bheil e a-nis air a dhol na chleachdadh aig cuid de luchd-labhairt na Gàidhlig a bhith a' bruidhinn na Beurla mar is trice agus tha seachdain a' Mhòid a' toirt cothrom dhuinn seo atharrachadh.

Feumaidh sinn cuimhneachadh ged tha nach eil adhbhar sam bith ann carson nach cum daoine orra a' bruidhinn Gàidhlig as dèidh seachdain a' Mhòid! Tha Gàidhlig aig 70% de mhuinntir nan Eilean Siar agus nam bruidhneadh iad sin ann an Gàidhlig nuair a gheibheadh iad an cothrom dhèanadh e diofar mòr dha ìomhaigh na Gàidhlig sna h-Eileanan.

Tha sinn cuideachd air postairean is soidhnichean beaga òrdanachadh a thèid an cleachdadh ann am bùthan a' bhaile. Tha sinn an dòchas gun gabh a h-uile neach ri seo is gun dèan iad oidhirp shònraichte gus a' Ghàidhlig a chleachdadh seachdain a' Mhòid."

Use your Gaelic campaign for the Mod

21/10/05

To mark the Royal National Mod 2005, the Western Isles Language Plan are hoping more Gaelic will be spoken on the streets of Stornoway. 200 badges have been ordered on which there are a variety of messages including Bruidhinn Gàidhlig rium' (Speak Gaelic to me) and Tha Beurla agam cuideachd.' (I also have English). These will be distributed amongst those working in the town - in shops, hotels, etc. - so that both those attending the Mod and islanders themselves will speak Gaelic to those with badges.

Maggie Mackay, Western Isles Language Plan Co-ordinator commented, We believe it is extremely important that those who have Gaelic speak it. It appears to now be customary for Gaelic speakers to more often speak English and Mod week gives us an opportunity to change this.

We must remember though that there is no reason why people shouldn't continue using Gaelic after Mod week! 60% of people in the Western Isles can speak Gaelic and if those were to speak Gaelic when they had the opportunity to do so it would make a big difference to Gaelic in the island - and in Scotland.

We also have signs for the shop counters and posters. We hope everyone will embrace this opportunity and will make the effort to use Gaelic during Mod week.
