Comunn na Gàidhlig (CnaG) has been vital to the development of Gaelic language since we began back in 1984. It was through CnaG’s work that a lot of the most important opportunities arose that still have an impact on Gaelic development today – for example growth in Gaelic Medium Education (GME); or pushing for Achd an Gàidhlig and to give the language protected status. Nowadays, as the work we used to do moved to Bòrd na Gàidhlig (BnaG) in 2005, CnaG started to focus on youth work above anything else. Our Gaelic Initiatives have been especially important to this work, from when they first started in 2009 in 8 areas, with funding from BnaG, that number grew to 13 areas in 2013, and we are now at a place where we hope to work in 19 areas – with a team of 20 Officers. Officially, CnaG is a company with charitable status. Our main office is situated in Inverness with another office in Stornoway. On top of that, our other employees and officers are situated all over the country.
We offer opportunities to young people to use Gaelic in fun, social settings, rather than them only having the opportunity to use Gaelic in the classroom. By doing this we hope to encourage young people to use the language, so that they are willing to use the language more often. We do this through our Gaelic Initiatives, offering different activities like Sradagan (and Campaichean Sradagan), offering the John Muir Award through Gaelic, or working with Comann nam Pàrant (CnamP) and Spòrs Gàidhlig – two separate groups that work as a part of CnaG.

Donald MacNeill
I am Donald MacNeill, and I have been Chief Executive of CnaG since 2010. Prior to this I worked as Gaelic Development Manager for The Highland Council; some 10 years with Highlands and Islands Enterprise in a number of roles; and a further 10 years as a broadcast journalist with STV, Grampian and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. While I live in Inverness, I have strong links to the Garenin in Carloway, Lewis.
Marina Murray
Marina is CnaG’s Director of Development, managing and supporting the ‘Iomairtean Ghàidhlig’ team across Scotland. She first started work with CnaG in 2009 as the Iomairt officer for North West Lewis. Before coming to CnaG Marina had been working with Comhairle nan Eilean’s Community Education team. She belongs to Point in Lewis.
Jenna Morrison
My name is Jenna Morrison. CnaG has played a pivotal role in shaping my career within the Gaelic community having been a past participant at many events, working in the Inverness office as part of a Student Placement Scheme, as an Iomairt Officer based in Harris and now as CnaG’s Administration Manager, based in Aberdeen. I have also worked as a development officer for Fèisean nan Gàidheal.
Dena MacLeod
Katrina Laurie
I am Katrina Laura, and I have worked with Comunn na Gàidhlig since 2014. I started as a Youth Development Officer with CnaG in Mull and Lochaber and, I am now a Youth Work Manager, working closely with our Officers all over Scotland. Originally I am from the Isle of Mull but I now live on the mainland in Lochaline, Morvern.
Aileas MacLeod
My name is Aileas MacLeod and I’m from the Isle of Skye. I am the Digital Communications and Communities Officer at Comunn na Gàidhlig. I started in this position in 2021 and I am based in the Inverness office. I do communications work (keeping the website and our social media’s up to date and writing press releases) and work in communities where we don’t currently have an Iomairt Officer (mostly through digital means).
